Amazon's MMO New World is a major hit, but it's also had some struggles since it went live last week. Long server queues have been the biggest issue, but it hit another bump in the road today with some unspecified "technical difficulties" that have forced multiple extensions to downtime for maintenance.
Amazon then said it needed to extend the ongoing maintenance for another hour and that it planned to bring the game back online at 8am PT / 11am ET / 4pm BST, but has since said it requires another couple of hours.
Routine downtime is typical for online games as it allows developers to make tweaks to settings and ensure that everything is still in sync after long periods of uptime. However, a series of delays like this could be problematic if they continue into New World’s future.
A one-hour extension isn't a big deal on its own, but another two hours—seven in total so far, with possibly more to come—is definitely unusual, or at least unexpected to the game's legions of players patiently waiting to wage war (or just do some 'relaxing' fishing).
New World released on September 28 and has attracted a massive number of players, including over a million on its launch day, according to Amazon.
The game’s 1.0.1 update, lays the groundwork for the character server transfer feature, which Amazon said today will be “available soon”.
